5E Life Cycle Approach
TSS Consultants has been working in collaboration with the Renewable Energy Institute International (REII) to develop the 5E assessment methodology. The components of this 5E assessment methodology are: (E1) technology evaluations at the research, development and demonstration stages; (E2) determination of energy and carbon conversion efficiencies; (E3) environmental impact assessments; (E4) economic analyses; and (E5) appraisals of socio-political effectiveness. Thus far, the potential capability of 15 categories of technologies, developed by over 450 organizations, has been evaluated by using this 5E assessment approach to determine the viability of these technologies for the co-production of bioethanol and bioelectricity from renewable biomass feedstocks. This 5E assessment approach enables a total system analysis, which can then be compared to other forms of energy production such as natural gas electricity generation or the total suite of generation encompassed by the California grid. TSS and REII will continue to develop this methodology and apply it to consulting and research projects throughout the western U.S., China and other strategic countries interested in performing these life cycle assessments.
