Project Title: Western Governors Association Biofuels Technology Assessment Report

TSS reviewed and summarized important past biofuel technology development projects in California and the Western U.S. region. Candidate biomass utilization technologies currently under active development in the private and public sector were reviewed and evaluated for the production of ethanol and other biofuels from biomass feedstocks (including MSW). TSS is utilizing its current database of nearly 450 organizations that have developed technologies for the conversion of biomass to renewable fuels and energy. A principal objective of this study was to identify opportunities in California for projects involving research, development, demonstration and ultimately commercialization of technologies to produce biomass-based fuels, including:
- Examining the most appropriate matches between candidate technologies and California’s inventoried biomass and MSW resources; and
- Determining the best options for biofuel production and combined biofuel and electricity production versus electricity production only.
