Project Title: Tusayan Biomass Gasification Feasibility Study
Client: Tusayan-Grand Canyon Sustainable Energy Project Committee Location: Northern Arizona
TSS conducted a preliminary feasibility study on the establishment of a biomass utilization facility near the Grand Canyon National Park in Northern Arizona. Taking into account issues such as local infrastructure, feedstock availability, regulatory constraints, and community acceptance, two potential plant site locations were analyzed. Once the project committee selected a preferred site, a fuel/feedstock assessment was conducted to determine the amount of biomass material (in the form of woody biomass from forest restoration activities), biosolids (from the local waste water facility), and locally generated municipal solid waste that would be available within a 50-mile radius of the target site. The fuel/feedstock assessment was then used to conduct a technology assessment to review and rank currently available gasification and combustion technologies that were capable of converting locally available biomass into heat and electrical energy, while meeting local regulatory issues and the community needs. Two preferred technologies were selected for detailed financial analysis. Back
